Why Patients Choose Us

At Valley Obesity Medicine & Diabetes, we’re here to walk alongside you—step by step, change by change—until you can confidently say: I feel like myself again.

Valley Obesity Medicine & Diabetes was founded by Dr. Michael Li, a Board-Certified physician in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine. After 15 years in Hospital Medicine, Dr. Li shifted his focus to outpatient care to better address chronic conditions, particularly obesity and diabetes.

Our Care Approach

Obesity Care

Obesity isn’t about willpower—it’s a medical condition with many root causes. With new tools, medications, and supportive strategies, it’s more treatable than ever. We create personalized care plans that fit your life and move you toward long-term success.

Diabetes Treatment

Obesity and diabetes are deeply connected. By focusing on weight management alongside diabetes care, we help you improve blood sugar control, reduce complications, and feel better day to day. Managing one condition often means progress in the other.

While commercial weight loss programs serve an important role in helping people lose weight, there are some differences between our practice and these programs.

Guided by a Board-Certified physician in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine, we assess, diagnose and treat obesity in the context of all its co-morbidities and complications.  Our expertise in understanding the pathophysiology of obesity, its interconnections with many co-morbidities and the pros and cons of various treatment options allows us to treat obesity not just more effectively, but also safely.  The primary objective of our obesity care is to prevent and minimize the impact of obesity on one’s overall health, not just to see a lower number on the scale.

Another difference is that you don’t need to pay a program/membership fee to be seen in our clinic.  We bill your insurance company for our services, just like any other medical practice.

We create custom treatment plans based on a comprehensive evaluation. Depending on your needs, your care may include medication, behavioral coaching, metabolic support, and ongoing follow-ups.

The most challenging aspect of obesity treatment is lifestyle and behavioral modification. As a specialty clinic, we don’t just advise our patients WHAT to do, we spend time to explain WHY they need to make certain changes, and teach them HOW to implement these changes.  To facilitate and sustain these changes, we plan to organize hiking trips, host cooking classes, run gardening seminars, and provide ongoing support by health coaches, dietician and diabetes educators as our team grows.  We also offer group visits which have been proven to be more effective in helping participants adopt healthier living habits.  Our goal is lasting change — not quick fixes.

Not at all. We welcome anyone concerned about their metabolic health or at risk of developing obesity or diabetes. Early care can prevent more serious health issues later.

Your initial appointment will be 60-minute long.  During your visit, we’ll spend most of the time reviewing your medical history related to weight and/or diabetes and talking about your lifestyle, goals, and challenges.  Focused physical examination will also be performed as part of the medical evaluation, including body composition analysis using our state of the art body composition scale. Additional assessment may also include laboratory or imaging studies after the visit. The primary objective during this visit is to uncover the root causes for YOUR difficulty achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, which will help us create a personalized treatment plan that works for YOU!.

Based on our conversation, we will most likely be able to make some initial recommendations for treatment during the first visit.  They can be behavioral or pharmaceutical, depending on where you are with your weight journey.  When indicated, appropriate referrals can also be made during the initial visit.
If you have health insurance that we participate with (see our Insurance section for the list of plans), your visit will typically be covered by your insurance, except for any required copay.

If your insurance plan is not one we currently participate with, we will still submit the claim to your insurance company as a courtesy. You will then be responsible for any remaining balance after your insurance has processed the claim. We do our best to keep our fees affordable, and in most cases, the remaining balance is $50 or less.

For patients without health insurance, our self-pay rates are:
  • $150 for an initial visit
  • $89 for each follow-up visit

We allow our patients to self schedule appointments by clicking on the “Schedule a Visit” link on our header.  You can also call us at 540-504-9174 to book a visit.  Lastly, you can send us your contact information and our staff will call you to schedule an appointment.
