Dr. Li is deeply passionate about Obesity Medicine and disease prevention, and believes that shifting healthcare toward proactive, whole-person care has the potential to transform outcomes while reducing long-term costs. Having immigrated from a developing country, he also has a strong commitment to serving underserved populations as a way of giving back to the country that has given him so much.

Through VOMD, Dr. Li is focused on providing physician-led, personalized care that restores health, reduces risk, and helps patients live fuller, healthier lives.

New clinic focuses on treating obesity as a disease

What Makes VOMD Different and Better?

At Valley Obesity Medicine & Diabetes (VOMD), we provide medically sound, long-term health partnerships rather than “quick fixes.” Here is why our Winchester-area practice is different:

    1. Double Board-Certified Expertise: Dr. Michael Li is certified in Internal and Obesity Medicine, treating the complex link between weight and chronic disease.
    2. Obesity as a Disease: We treat obesity with the same clinical rigor as asthma or hypertension, focusing on medical science over willpower.
    3. FDA-Approved Medications: For your safety, we only prescribe rigorously tested, FDA-approved treatments—never compounded alternatives.
    4. Behavioral Support: Our partnership with a clinical psychologist addresses the emotional and mental aspects of sustainable weight loss.
    5. Insurance Accessibility: Unlike “cash-only” clinics, we accept most major insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid.
    6. Transparent Self-Pay Pricing: We offer discounted rates for self-pay patients to ensure financial barriers don’t block your goals.

Prevention & Chronic Illness Reversal

A Vision Born from Experience

Valley Obesity Medicine & Diabetes was founded by Dr. Michael Li, a physician Board-Certified in both Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine.

For 15 years, Dr. Li cared for patients in the hospital setting, often treating serious complications of chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. What became clear to him over those years was that so many of these life-threatening conditions had a common root: untreated or undertreated obesity.

He saw patients return again and again with preventable complications—not because they lacked effort or willpower, but because the traditional healthcare system wasn’t built to address obesity as the complex, chronic medical condition it truly is.

In 2021, Dr. Li made the decision to transition from hospital-based medicine to outpatient care, dedicating his focus to prevention and long-term disease management. His passion for Obesity Medicine grew out of a belief that if we address obesity at its root, we can transform the way people live, feel, and age.

Bringing a New Model of Care to the Shenandoah Valley

Before launching Valley Obesity Medicine & Diabetes, Dr. Li explored several paths to make modern obesity treatment more accessible to the Shenandoah Valley community. With the encouragement and support of local patients, colleagues, and families, he ultimately chose to establish an independent practice.

This independence allows Valley Obesity Medicine & Diabetes to adopt innovative, patient-centered care models proven to achieve better outcomes—especially for individuals who have struggled to find lasting success in weight management within the traditional healthcare system. Here, we have the freedom to focus on what works: personalized treatment plans, advanced medical therapies, behavioral strategies, and compassionate support that meets patients where they are.
